Psalm 29

Read Psalm 29 ESV

Who - David writing a praise song about God, to the gathered people and the heavenly beings.

What - David writes this praise song about the LORD, describing the LORD’s majesty and might through just His voice.  He also describes how all the creatures, both earthly and heavenly, sing praise to the LORD and acknowledge His might (vs 9).  David makes a request to the LORD for strength and peace to be given to the LORD’S people.

When - Unstated

Where - Unstated

Why - To praise the LORD, describe the might and majesty of His voice to the hearers and to ask for peace.

How - David calls first on the heavenly beings to ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.  By “ascribe” David means to acknowledge what they know is true of God.  David goes on in vs 2-9 to describe the power, might and majesty of the LORD’S voice.  The voice of the LORD has authority over creation, breaks the nations (vs 5 & 6), shakes the wilderness and the land (likely a reference to earthquakes) and results in glory being cried out to Him.  David ends this song with the acknowledgment of the LORD’S authority and rule.  The LORD rules over the destructive forces of nature and is the great King over all heaven and earth.  Here David makes his request to the LORD.  May the LORD give strength and peace to His people.

So What
  1. Recognize the power and majesty of the LORD’S voice.  He speaks into and out of existence everything that was, is and will be.  Praise Him for His power and might, and know this is Who we make our requests to.  Including the request for strength and peace.
  2. The LORD has authority over and complete control of all powerful events in nature.  Natural disasters are a regular part of our experience here on this earth.  (i.e. tornados, floods, earthquakes etc)    None of them occur without His permission if not direct command.  Our God speaks and the wind is an F5 tornado.  Our God speaks and the F5 tornado suddenly becomes a dust devil.  Why the LORD allows/send natural disasters are varied and beyond our purpose in this meditation.  Whatever the reasons the LORD has for a particular event, we must humble ourselves before the God of such power and strength and acknowledge He is God!
  3. Jesus displayed the same power with His voice described here by the LORD’S voice.  Jesus spoke and the wind and waves ceased.  Jesus spoke and the blind saw and the deaf heard.  Jesus spoke and the demons trembled and begged for mercy.  In all of Scripture only God can have this kind of power in His voice.  Therefore, the power of Christ's voice is another sign of His divinity.  To call upon the name of Jesus is to call upon the power of His voice.
