Psalm 32

Read Psalm 32 ESV

Who - David writing a poem to the people and to the LORD.

What - A poem describing God’s forgiveness to those who confess and repent.  David is describing to us how blessed is the person the LORD forgives, the conditions for forgiveness and the distress that comes from unrepentance.

When - Unknown

Where - Unknown

Why - It appears to come at a time David is acutely aware of his sin.  He feels his guilt and his remorse.  David expresses for us the promise of the LORD’S forgiveness to those who confess and repent.  He does so to give hope and encouragement to us to seek the LORD’S forgiveness.

How - David begins with the admonition how good it is to be forgiven by the LORD.  Then David describes his own experience when he had unconfessed sin, followed by his experience when he confessed and repented before the LORD.  David then gives a series of instructions/ calls to action for us.
  1. Offer prayers to the LORD.  These are implied to mean prayers of confession and repentance for the purpose of reconciliation to the LORD.
  2. Do not be stubborn in your sin like a horse or mule, which will only respond after pain from the master.
  3. Warning of the pain the wicked experience and the joy of righteousness.
  4. A call to praise the LORD.

So What
  1. Do just what David calls us to do.  Seek the LORD while He may be found and ask for His forgiveness.
  2. When the opportunity presents itself, follow David’s example and teach and explain to others the importance of confession and repentance.  David shared with us the blessings he experienced through confession and repentance.  You will enter into a conversation with someone who needs to hear the importance of confession and repentance.  They also need to hear the joy and peace you gained by your own confession and repentance.
  3. Do not harbor sin in our hearts, it leads to misery.  The degree and intensity of our misery is directly proportional to the length of time we harbor sin in our hearts.  I think of it like an infected boil on our skin.  The longer we go without dealing with it, the more painful and irritating it becomes affecting so much of our daily activity.
  4. While confession and repentance are hard to do, it restores our joy and delight to living.  Different attitudes makes confession and repentance hard to do, pride, a sense of being wronged etc.  None of those change the fact we can’t have real joy and delight again until we confess and repent and are reconciled to our heavenly Father through Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior.  If you know you have some unconfessed sin in your heart but are resisting confession and repentance ask yourself, “Why am I fighting confession and repentance?”  The answer will reveal more than you could imagine, but it will unlock your resistant heart to the work of the Holy Spirit.
