Psalm 8

Read Psalm 8 ESV

Who - David writes a song to God, but it is a corporate song, so it is the people to God.

What - This is a song of praise and worship to God.  This is a group song, the opening and closing pronouns of the singers are plural.  It is still right to sing this to the LORD as an individual act of praise, but it's original intent was a corporate praise song.  This song declares the LORD’S majesty and awe.

When - Unknown

Where - Unknown

Why - David writes this song to praise the LORD for his majesty and awe.  Also to praise the LORD that he has chosen man as the ruler over all the earth despite man's lowly position.

How - David uses three stanzas and a closing line.  In the opening stanza David declares the Majesty of the LORD.  the LORD’S glory is higher than the earth and the heavens.  The LORD displays his glory by using the mouths of babies to silence his enemies.  In stanza two David declares his amazement that the LORD has shown attention to humanity when He created the heavens.  In the third stanza David continues describing the favor the LORD has shown humanity.  The LORD has crowned humanity with dominion over the earth.  Even making us a little lower than the angels.  David ends with the same line he opened the song, thus they serves as a bookends to this song.

In verse two most scholars see the term “strength” in verse two as strength to God through praise to him.  This is how it is translated in the Septuagint (the OT translation of Jesus's day and the one used by New Testament authors).  Therefore when Jesus quotes this verse in Matthew 21:16, after the religious leaders object to the singing to Jesus by children, Jesus is claiming to be God.  Because this verse is about praising the LORD.

So What

  1. Be amazed at the majesty of the LORD.  Look at how majestic He is in vs 1-3; Isaiah 6:1-7; Ezekiel 1:4-28; and Exodus 19:16-20.  He is truly full of awe and wonder.
  2. This psalm is about Jesus as well, so be amazed at Christ majesty.  Look at how majestic Jesus is in Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:28-36; John 20:19-29; Acts 1:9-11; Revelation 1:9-18, 5:1-14, 19:11-16, 21:22-24, and 22:12-16.
  3. Plan a night to look at the stars.  Pick a clear night when you can see the stars, drive to a location good for viewing if necessary.  Read Psalm 8:3-4, and Psalm 19:1.  Then look it all the stars of heaven. See how big God is by recognizing he made all you see and don't see.
  4. Ask yourself of a purpose question: What is my role in dominion over the earth?  Each of us have a God given role to play in humans dominion over the earth.  Some care for creatures, Some for the creation, others teach about the creation to name a few.
