Who - Sons of Korah write a choir song to God.
What - This is a song for the people to sing to God. A song to strengthen their faith in God during a crisis. The crisis appears to be threats of war/violence from other nations.
When - Unstated, but it appears to be during threat of war.
Where - Unstated
Why - This song is meant to reduce fear and anxiety by strengthening the singers/hearers faith and trust in God’s deliverance.
How - The psalmist calls the people to remember God is their refuge in times of trouble and not to be afraid. The psalmist calls the people to trust God even when the forces of nature are creating chaos. The reason they can trust is because God is a place of refuge and safety in this chaos. All of this chaos and danger from other nations can be ended by the utterances of His voice. The psalmist calls the people to remember God’s great works. The psalmist ends with the call from God, “Be still and know that I am God.” To see Him as their fortress.
So What
- When anxiety or fear grips your heart, do not run or fret. Stop, be still, be quiet and know God. In anxiety, quieting our heart can be very difficult. Taking our “eyes” off the cause of our fear and looking to our Savior will make quieting our soul doable.
- Knowing God means remembering His mighty works and promises. Remember not just what He has done for the people of the Bible, remember what He has done for you. Recall the dangers you were in and He delivered you.
