Psalm 65

Read Psalm 65 ESV

Who - David writes a praise song to the LORD.

What - A song of praise to the LORD for His provisions and care for His people.

When - Unstated

Where - Unstated

Why - David seems to write this psalm as a praise song to be sung by Israel.  It appears he wants the people to see how the LORD has provided for them in physical and spiritual ways, then give the LORD praise for these provisions.

How - David opens this psalm with the declaration that the LORD is due praise and the performing of vows.  He follows it with the declaration of how the LORD has atoned for the people's transgressions.  David goes on next to declare how blessed is the person the LORD draws to Him to dwell in His courts.  There, in God’s house, the LORD’S people will be satisfied.  David uses the next stanza to describe the LORD’S power over nature.  He shows the LORD has authority over all the earth and forces of nature.  The purpose of the LORD’S control is so all who dwell on the earth will be in awe of the signs the LORD displays through nature.  David begins the next stanza acknowledging it is the LORD who provides for the crops and their bounty.  His provision is so much that even the wild and uncultivated areas produce plenty and declare praise to the LORD.

So What

  1. As we enjoy the bounty of the LORD’S provisions we need to stop, acknowledge His work to make that provision and thank Him for it.  If the LORD does not send rain and sun in the right proportions, we do not eat.  So we should pray for His kind hand to do so.
  2. Enjoy the gift of the LORD’S creation and praise Him for it.  It is good to take moments and enjoy the creation and be amazed at it.
  3. We should look for the LORD’S special work in creation, when we see it point it out to believers and nonbelievers.
  4. We too can praise the LORD and perform vows because he has atoned for our transgressions through Jesus Christ.
  5. We not only enjoy cleansing and entering into the LORD’S presence, but we also enjoy fellowship with Him everywhere we go through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
  6. Be amazed and humbled that the LORD chose us and called us to Him.  It is stunning the LORD would chose us and and call us when we realize what He is getting and what it costs Him to draw us near.  What amazing love, how can it be?!
