Psalm 94

Read Psalm 94 ESV

Who - An unnamed psalmist talking to the LORD and then to the people.

What -This is a psalm of thanksgiving and lament, it is also a wisdom psalm.  The psalmist is saying three things:
  1. The psalmist is thanking the LORD for his deliverance of the psalmist from danger and the wicked person.
  2. The psalmist is lamenting over the actions of the wicked people who oppress and abuse those around the psalmist.
  3. The psalmist is also instructing his hearers about the downfall of the wicked so they will resist the temptation to adopt their ways.
When - Unknown

Where - Unknown

Why - Either a foreign group or a group of Israelites not living in covenant faithfulness have taken control of the land and are oppressing the people by wicked actions.  The psalmist is talking to the LORD for help and acknowledging the LORD'S previous deliverance.  He is also warning others not to fall for the temptation to adopt the methods and philosophies of the wicked.  Because despite the current prosperity of the wicked, the LORD sees and hears and will bring them to justice.

How - The psalmist opens with a call to the LORD to act against the wicked who are oppressing and abusing the LORD’S people.  He describes the specific actions the wicked are doing and ends this section with the words of the wicked challenging the LORD’s character and power.

The next short section warns that the LORD does see and hear.  Only the foolish think they are getting away unnoticed.  The third section is a short admonition to the righteous to not lose faith, the LORD will deliver and bring justice to his people, the righteous ones.  The last section is where the psalmist declares the LORD’S coming help and justice.  It is the LORD who helps and is the place of refuge.  The righteous can trust the LORD and his character.

So What
  1. When evil and wicked men prosper it is tempting join them.  However, the current success of the wicked is not a sign of their overcoming God.  The LORD God Almighty will bring justice and the wicked's downfall.  Joining them is foolishness.
  2. While it may seem the LORD does not see or hear what the wicked are doing, we can be assured He does.  His current inaction is for some purpose and we must remember He will act in His time to deal with our oppressors.
  3. When it seems the LORD is inactive we must look back in Scripture and in our own lives, and remember how the LORD does act.  We must rely on these previous experiences as evidence he will act and being faithful now is worth it.
  4. While the LORD does see and hear what the wicked do, we should lay our grievances and oppression before Him when we cry out for help.
  5. Always remember in times of trouble, the LORD is our refuge and help.
